The Engineering Shapes and Solutions Division of Switzerland-headquartered Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG) specialises in the development, processing, manufacture and application of advanced high-performance thermoplastics and composites.

In South Africa, MCG produces a range of semi-finished, machinable polymer stock shapes including KEYLON polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), TIVAR ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and Nylatron cast nylons. These materials are designed for machinability, durability and resistance to aggressive environments. The company also offers services such as component design, prototyping and performance evaluation, supported by computer numerical control manufacturing capabilities.

A key segment of the portfolio is pump solutions for aggressive environments. As the agent for WERNERT pumps and spares in Southern Africa, MCG supplies manufacturing and mine sites across the country. The high-performance pumps consist of MCG-engineered plastics supported by cast steel and feature thick-walled plastic components, optimised impellers and specialised sealing systems, enabling safe operation in high-risk chemical transfer applications and the handling of aggressive, abrasive and toxic media. The pumps are available in centrifugal, submersible and magnetically coupled configurations.

In bulk materials handling, the company provides polymer lining systems used in bins, silos, chutes and transport equipment. The linings are designed to be self-lubricating and abrasion-resistant to help reduce friction and prevent material build-up.

Another specialised offering is the VERSIV range of PTFE-coated fabrics and belts, engineered for extreme temperature and chemically aggressive environments. With the ability to withstand temperatures up to 260 °C, the composite materials offer barrier protection, dielectric control insulation, mechanical stability, and non-stick easy-release properties suitable for applications requiring hygiene and efficiency.

MCG’s portfolio of materials is applied across a variety of sectors, including paper and pulp, chemical and petrochemical, mining, bottling and canning, general engineering, power generation, food and pharmaceuticals, packaging, unit material handling, transportation and textiles.

MCG asserts that its integrated approach, combining material science, design expertise and manufacturing capabilities, enables it to provide scalable, high-performance solutions that address complex industrial challenges in South Africa’s key sectors.

View MCG’s diverse range of products at the upcoming Electra Mining Africa expo to be held from September 7 to 11 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec.
